THE IBM WORLD NEW YORK PAVILION

IBM World Fair Pavilion
New York. NEW YORK. United States. 1964 – 1965
architects: Eero Saarinen et Charles & Ray Eames

The collaboration between Charles and Ray Eames with the most successful American architects of their generation has created a series of extraordinary projects that dealt with the propaganda of American culture, ephemeral architecture and deliberate use of images with a political objective. Outside the pavilion they did with Buckminster Fuller for the first USA-USSR cultural exchange fair, it is distinguished by the project they built with Eero Saarinen for IBM.

The IBM pavilion was a huge shaped ellipsoid theater 90 feet above the fairgrounds. But it was the enormous domed theater ellipsoid top, covered by IBM repeated letters 1000 After that was the attraction of the pavilion. Le public est entré dans une tribune abrupte connue sous le nomLes gens au mur.” 500 personnes étaient assise guidé par des pistes dans le théâtre, while a narrator appeared, suspended before them in a small flat – circular.

The show, 12 minutes of fun multi-media by designer Charles Eames noted, in use 14 slides and film projectors, special lighting effects, and stereophonic sound to show how the human mind (his – even a computer) solved the problems. The screens of different shapes and sizes surrounded by the public and information bombarded them from various directions. The display, front and center, a montré tout le cerveau d’une personne interprété l’information de ses sens (represented by peripheral screens) and acting on them. For a public that everything had never met as this presentation, it was amazing.

Peut-être le plus frappant a été construit par International Business Machines, ou IBM.

There are several movies, film clips and more multimedia projects presented throughout the exhibition, which serves as a metaphor for the Eames pioneer of this multi-media architecture. They were known for their innovative installation projects that have been created for corporate and government clients, IBM environmental agencies. In particular, Think (1964) the presentation of the multi-screen movie shown in the theater ovoid IBM Pavilion at the World Exhibition in New York 1964-1965, was a feat standout who showed them that the thinkers before their time. And not pretentiously, on the contrary, they kept: excel to their most iconic designs better and better – while having fun. Interspersed among their many professional projects, they are the objects of their personal collection that really help to color the lives of designers. love letters filled with sketches and doodles showcase their creativity as well as their larger multimedia projects, and it is in these small details we see that their love of design was matched by the love they had for each other. Their philosophy and belief that there was no difference between work and life is brilliantly enhanced by the combination of creative and personal pieces with practical and professional designs.

One of the most famous design is the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman emblematic developed for the company Herman Miller furniture. On display on the second floor of the exhibition, this classic pairing furniture is as relevant today as it was when the first exit 1956. Another of their most iconic designs of all time is their own home, and in this exhibition we can see detailed drawings, plans and ordered a new 01:50 model of Case Study Houses # 8 and # 9, produced by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners. Their houses (part of the case series study commissioned by Arts House & Architecture) were a powerful expression and emblematic of their attitude towards life, and it is really fascinating to feel that you get a glimpse inside and behind the process. It's easy to see why it is a building that has been celebrated ever since its completion in 1949.
