Arc Pavilion of Culture (2012) Daegu, South Korea
Arc Pavilion at World Expo 2012
The CRA – Pavilion of Culture of the river
Asymptote, includes a silver pavilion was installed on an artificial river Peninsula in South Korea as part of Expo 2012
Architect: Architecture d’Asymptote
Pays: Korea, Republic of (South Korea)
City: Daegu
The pavilion is built River Culture in Daegu, South Korea,
on the site where four rivers meet.
Knippers Helbig developed the facade and structural design of the building through the schematic stage.
The structural design of the building is represented by the clear division between the shell and the core, which allows the development of a lightweight shell structure and avoids creating forces immobilized between the two systems.
The main structure of the flag is composed of a composite structure of steel and concrete laterally stabilized by two nuclei in concrete.
The vertical movement winds around a central open space.
The facade consists of a steel grid supported laterally by the primary structure.
L’architecture du River Culture Pavilion (ARC) is a powerful official statement that combines Nature, technology and space. The bold curve shape CRA is perched on a peninsula that flows into the river and surrounded by a stunning natural environment. The building is an important focal point against a panoramic landscape. The architecture is made up of a ship-like shape that is covered with pillows ETFE silver fries which, through a piece of transparency and geometry, creates a temporary effect.

This air quality in the building enclosure is accentuated by light reflections from a shallow pool of water around the base. While the visible part of the building is at the top of a landscape formed artificially, the exhibition gallery is hidden below the space through which visitors enter. While the exterior of the plated structure ETFE captures the quality of the changing light with the open sky and the river landscape in the background, the dark and hermetic inside the main structure houses an immersive multimedia environment lit only by abstract projections and re-conceptualized qualities of the surrounding site. The architecture allows the visitor experience to be alternating between a "real" experience water, the sky and the landscape surrounding the building, And a virtual experience presented by media. This experience culminates on the roof where a large pond reflects the sky and reflecting an observation deck allows visitors to overlook the site and its natural surroundings from a different perspective.
Located next to the river Daugu, the flag of the culture of the CRA river was one of the pavilions of the river Four in the international fair.
Each pavilion presented an exhibition on the restoration project of four rivers, an initiative that aims to preserve the Han River Ecosystem, Nakdong, Geum et Yeong San.

that give a quilted texture and silver colored external walls.
technological sophistication
The facade to the pillow of the ARC building is not only one of the most dominant features of its exterior, it is also one of the finest features of the whole building.
The ETFE cushions covering the facades are fitted with pneumatic chambers that control the transmission of heat through the front, while allowing the building to breathe.
In addition, cushions are backlit and printed with a pattern, allowing the building to constantly change its appearance.
So, of more than one way, the facade makes the building alive, which adds to the overall objective of the pavilion: blur the boundary between what is natural and what is an artificial approximation.
As said the main designer Hani Rashid, ARC pavilion:
” A canvas which communicates with and is responsive to its occupants in a manner that reflects the human condition.”
