This superb is the first tollgate built many designed projects few Arup for the expansion of the Baku International Airport.

Situation:
The airport is located 20 km northeast of Baku. It lies in the east, on the south shore of the peninsula Absheron, at the edge of the Caspian Sea.

Autoban:
Designed five types of cocoons,

from 305 square feet 3700 square feet,
20 feet 34 feet tall and 20 feet and 39 feet in diameter.

The cocoon structures include a lattice of curved wooden beams slotted together. Some types of cocoon leave the lattice structure exposed, which allows to see inside passerbys. Each cocoon took two weeks to Ankara, contractor based in Turkey MAPA building. Laminate, diamond-shaped wooden panels that create a woven appearance or form’ scales covered other types of cocoon; each closed cocoon took about three weeks to construire.Certaines forms sheathed in a narrow point at the top while d’ other are truncated at an angle.

The airport is the largest project to date
for partners Autoban Seyhan Özdemir and Sefer Çaglar.

We are interested in the experience in the design, creating a balance between the ornament and control, dit-Caglar. He and Özdemir and picked the precise reasons that appear in the terminal structure and ends in celebrating galore to make the space feel both comfortable and chic. "For the cocoons, »Didi Özdemir, "We played with natural materials and worked with artisans, but we also used CNC milling and laser cutting. "

The team used Rhino and AutoCAD to design the cocoons and 3DS Max to place the cocoons in the overall interior design. They printed a 3D model framework cocoons ABS-M30 i, a biocompatible, thermoplastic production quality, at 40: 610 or 0,065 ladder, better known as the designers to evaluate the visual and functional aspects of cocoons. Before construction began, Ankara, contractor based in Turkey Mapa built a scale model in Ankara.

The goal of the design aesthetic is to create spaces that are a pleasure to use, encourage relaxation and reduce stress. This is achieved by naturally lit spaces generously proportioned with internal and external views extended. The terminal will also offer luxury shopping and leisure.
The design includes a tapered front that gives the building a unique appearance. The innovative shape allows light of the facade and the roof to enter the space. Skylights are an integral part of the roof steel structure.

Design
Arup is responsible for the design of a new facade for the existing international terminal. The work includes stripping the existing facade, adding insulation and replacing with a wire mesh front in harmony with the design of the new terminal.
The terminal design was greatly influenced by the vision and customer design ideas, M. Jahangir Askerov, President of Azerbaijan Airlines (SKIN). Bakou is a seismic zone, and the design uses a framework resistant system to allow seismic forces.

The terminal will have eight air bridges and is compatible with the Boeing 676.

The construction of this unique project began with the completion of the new entrance tollgate in October 2010. Most of the remaining construction should begin in early 2011 and end in 2013.
