Skull Wellness

Skull wellness by Atelier van Lieshout 2008

Under the Wellness skull skull, there is a sauna for eight people. Steam can escape through the orbits. In the neck The area can be bathed in a small bath with hand shower. A shower is also attached to the outside.

The work was originally created for an exhibition in Germany. In an interview, Van Lieshout has a bit of intimidation that year [in respect of another work of art] that art can have a role in disrupting. And about the Wellness skull: ” It's a job that can be interpreted in different ways “.

The bath skull appears to be a symbolic installation to purify the soul and purify the conscience. A more subtle interpretation: it could be a reference to the human characteristic to smooth everything that does not match its expectations set out above (dissonance cognitive), smoothing head or washing, until the image you can continue with yourself. Cleaning can be done individually (for example, something that seems unattainable: "I do not want to have anyway") or collectively (something that would not have happened is: 'We did not know it'). So, through the spiritual cleansing, life remains viable.

The experience of a visitor: "By penetrating into the skull, you shall put away the worries of contemporary society and you will dive into the thought of life, death and emptiness of our physical. It's like an instant dose or an existential meditation. “

The skull is the symbol of death, finitude of life, and on many paintings of "vanity" centuries ago, He is represented. Derived from this c & rsquo; is also the symbol of victory over the & rsquo; enemy, and the pirate flag symbol of freedom that is celebrated and taken over others. The brain is also considered to be the residence of the & rsquo; mind, l & rsquo; soul lives in the legs dome with windows and passages of the & rsquo; ear to the outside world. L & rsquo; mind can do everything in its sphere, it can forge plans, develop theories, initiate activities. But it can also withdraw, reflect and develop his own perception.

Van Lieshout seems to refer to all of these aspects in its various works skull. In 2009, he directed two shelters for Dordrecht as d & rsquo; an egg and d & rsquo; a skull symbolizing the beginning and end of life. Sa sculpture & lsquo; Much Lead’ from 2010 The Hague is an echo of the victory celebration by headhunters. In 2005, he made a cell as d & rsquo; a skull in which a single person can work concentrated and a comfortable armchair skull closing key in 2007 to escape the & rsquo; agitation to & rsquo; outside the skull and wellness where & rsquo; spirit can be cleaned.

The artist collective whose interventions touch the art, the design and architecture was founded by Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout, born in 1963 to Raventein, a Hollande.
