Both projects are currently under construction, with a calendar to come.

Located in the Gold Coast Aranya community in Beidaihe, UCCA dunes , designed by OPEN Architecture and commissioned by Aranya, will be officially programmed and operated by the UCCA Foundation , announced at a UCCA press conference in Beijing on September 1 2018.

OPEN architecture shared construction images from one of its most anticipated projects. Located on a quiet beach along the coast of Bohai Bay, in northern China, the “dune art museum” East, as indicated by his name, buried in a sand dune. For the construction of the underground structure, the design team excavated the site and built a concrete network with a total area of 930 square meters. As construction proceeds, the bare shells will be covered with sand and the original state of the dune will be restored, including shrubs that help stabilize it.

In September 2018, the UCCA – the main independent contemporary art institution in China – announced that it would work in partnership with OPEN to program and manage the museum, which will now be known as a UCCA. the exhibitions will be designed to exist in dialogue with the unique shape of the building and its relationships with the natural environment. While the exterior of the museum is fully integrated into nature, its interior spaces were designed as a mysterious network of organically shaped caves.

This series of cell-like spaces can accommodate a range of programs, including galleries, studios and a café of different sizes. After going through a long dark tunnel and a small reception area, this space opens up as visitors enter the largest multifunctional gallery where a skylight provides spectacular lighting.

Meanwhile, a spiral staircase leads to a gazebo on the sand dune, guiding the public from the dark corners of the museum's cavern galleries to the vast opening of the sea and the sky.

OPEN work simultaneously on the plans of an adjacent sister institution – the sea arts museum – that would emerge from the water like a lonely rock. in a close future, a long walkway will extend into the ocean, allowing visitors to walk between the two museums when the tide is low.

The first inaugural exhibition of the UCCA dune, which should open later in 2018, explore the relationship between man and nature in the context of China's rapid development.

The Aranya complex is located on the coast of the Bohai Sea, around 300 km from Beijing by car or an hour and a half by car from 90 minutes by train. Travel time will be significantly reduced when a high-speed train opens next year.

Beidaihe District and the surrounding city of Qinhuangdao work for Beijing like the Hamptons to New York or the Cape Cod to Boston, explain Tinari. “Many Pekingese have weekend homes.” The co-founder of Aranya, Ma Yin, also recruited Beijing theater manager Meng Jinghui to open a theater near the museum. Cui Jian, seminal rock musician, owns a recording studio and is building a second, more advanced space.

Sanlian Public Library,
nicknamed the “the most lonely library in the world”
opened on a secluded beach nearby in 2015.

UCCA Dune, ou Shaqiu en mandarin, contains seven interior and three exterior galleries, with parts of the curved building dug in the sand. A second smaller building, which will be completed next year, will be built in water and partially submerged. It will only be accessible at low tide via a narrow causeway.
