British Airways i360 is an observation tower 162 meters on the seafront of Brighton in the Earth end of the old pier West.

The tower opened on 4 August 2016.



From fully open viewing podium , visitors will have a view of 360 ° Brighton, South Downs, the Channel and the clearest possible days Beachy Head 17 miles (27 km) east and the Isle of Wight 49 in what (79 km) West. Designed to accommodate 200 people together, the superstructure is no small feat of ingenuity of design. Made of 24 glass segments by hand, each flap is double glazed and constructed from two laminated sheets, curved glued together and separated from each other by a double glazed sealed air space. Tempered glass such as this can not be cut to size, so that each piece was formed precisely from start to fit snugly into the steel "ribs" of the dome.

Preparation of West Pier columns


In total, 38 columns were carefully transported by Mackley, the prime contractor for British Airways i360, West Sussex in their yard.

The columns were stored safely until the landscape design project can begin.
At the end of 2014, Landscape design team commissioned a condition report for the general state of the columns.
The columns were found to be suitable for reuse in non-structural capacity and non load bearing.
A more detailed inventory of the columns was carried out during autumn 2015. Each column was numbered, measured and evaluated according to its relevance.

During the winter 2015, the columns were transported to Swan Foundry in Oxfordshire.
Swan worked with Marks Barfield Architects for the restoration of West Pier toll booths which are now each side of British Airways i360.

The design team felt it was important to keep as much as possible the intrinsic character columns. By working closely with Swan, a decision was made to rotate slightly. This roller surface, dirt and shingle were eliminated without the columns are shiny or smooth. During this process, the number of columns used was reduced to 24.

were commissioned to design and manage the production of specialized cast details to sit around the base of each column and complete their striking simplicity.
